Sadly, we at MyDogandMe know
the great loss of losing a beloved pet. This pet memorials
page will give you helpful advice and tips about to
deal with such a traumatic loss.
• Let it out. Tell yourself it is okay
to feel the sorrow you are experiencing and
that you are entitled to grieve. Our pets are
often times our best friends and it hurts tremendously
when they leave us. It is okay to be sad and
angry and it is perfectly healthy to allow yourself
to cry.
• Have a formal pet memorials ceremony.
We hold funerals for people to help us say goodbye,
so it is only natural to do the same when a
pet dies. Invite your closest family and friends
to your pet’s final resting place and
have a pet memorial. This is a time to share
favorite memories and photographs and even to
say a prayer if you like. There are no standards
for pet memorials, so just do what feels right
for you and your pet’s memory.
• Make a donation in
your pet’s name. Helping other animals
in need is good, healthy way to handle the grief
associated with the loss of a pet.
• Put away painful reminders. Do not
let your pet’s toys, food bowls, etc.
linger. They are constant reminders that your
pet is gone. But, do NOT throw everything
associated with your pet away, as you may
regret it later. Save a few special reminders
and put them away safely until you feel you
are ready to look at them again. Eventually
these items will be joyous reminders of the
times you and your pet shared together.
• Stay active. Do not wallow in your
pain as that benefits no one, least of all
you. Spend time with friends, go on a trip,
or go to the movies. Allow yourself to have
a good time and do not feel guilty when you
laugh. Remember how much your pet loved you
and know he or she would want you to be happy.
• Do not “replace” your
pet right-a-way. Your heart may tell you to
get another pet as soon as possible, but it
is a good idea to wait until you are completely
through the grieving process. If you hastily
bring another animal in your home before you
have dealt with your loss, you may end up
resenting the new animal and feeling even
worse.
• Get help if you need it. If you feel
your pain is just too much to bear and you
cannot take it, there are people you can talk
to. Not only are there your friends, family
and veterinarian, but there are organizations
and professional therapists all over the world
who can help you. Look in your local directories
for more info on organizations like these.
